3rd Sunday of Easter

You are witnesses of these things
DATES OF NOTE:
April 22: Earth Day

Following the announcement by Premier Ford on Friday, April 16, outlining further restrictions attached to the Stay-at-Home Order, as of Monday, April 19, 2021, all churches in the Diocese of Hamilton are closed until further notice.

Masses for this Sunday, April 18 will take place with the 15% capacity limit and the observance of all other COVID-19 protocols.

Although there will be no public Masses, all booked intentions will be remembered in Father's daily private Mass.

Our condolences to the loved ones of Joyce Zelinsky. A long-time and dedicated member of Canadian Martyrs, her family has a long history with our faith community. May she rest in peace.

Sunday Reflection

Watch this week's Sunday reflection here!

Our mission continues!  Great thanks to all for your continuing contributions, especially those who have signed up for recurring donations through our website.  We continue to need your support.  For those who prefer to donate through weekly envelopes, these can be dropped off at Mass on Sunday, or to the office trailer mailbox, between 11 am & 4 pm, on Wednesdays or Saturdays.
Our university students are in the midst of exams - we invite you to keep them in your prayers, as they are in ours.
Last week at the Bishop’s Mass, His Excellency Douglas Crosby gave a special commission to our new Student Executive Team. We are blessed and honoured that these students have agreed to take on a special role in student leadership next year. Please keep them and all our student leaders in your prayers as they plan and prepare for the coming academic year!
Exam Drop-In

Have a coffee on us! As our students head into exam season, our Chaplaincy will be hosting an exam drop-in each day from 1:30-2:30 on the student discord server. Each day there will be time for students to check-in, de-stress, socialize, and a chance to win a free coffee giveaway!

Cornerstone Project

Most of our updates focus on functional aspects, but here's a nice look at some "form." These beautiful stained glass windows were removed during the last renovation (the one that added the old meeting room) and we have now been able to reinstall them! The amazing skylights that run along the building will allow the light to come into the space, and stream through these windows that look into the sacristy.

Be sure to check out the website for pictures of the progress!
In other Cornerstone news, we'll be moving out of the trailer soon! While the building isn't quite ready for us to move into the office proper, the trailer is going to be towed away as of April 26th! We'll be taking up temporary residence in the Church hall for at least 2 weeks, possibly a little longer.
Fortunately, the move out of the trailer should prove easier than the move into it!

And for anyone wondering... still no departure date for the port-o-potty.
If you would like to have a Mass celebrated for a special occasion, on behalf of a family member, a friend, or a deceased loved one, please call the office to have that intention put into the calendar.

Catholic Education Week 2021 begins on Sunday, May 2, 2021. The Catholic schools in our parish will engage in a series of events to celebrate the ongoing gift of publicly-funded Catholic education. You are invited to learn about the various celebrations that are happening in your children’s school, and are welcome to attend, if possible. Publicly funded Catholic education has existed in Ontario since 1841 and its graduates have served Ontario and Canada very well. The current generation of students in our publicly funded Catholic schools will serve with the same spirit and generosity as their previous generations.

This year’s Catholic Education Week theme is, “Nurturing Hope.”

The theme for Catholic Education Week 2021 was inspired by the following considerations:
  • Recognition of the special Year of Laudato Si’ which will run through May 24, 2021, announced by Pope Francis on May 24, 2020, the fifth anniversary of his papal encyclical, “On Caring for Our Common Home.”
  • In the face of the ongoing reality of the COVID-19 pandemic, a strong desire by the planning committee, along with those consulted, and supported by feedback from the survey, for continuity with the theme for Catholic Education Week 2020, Igniting Hope, which has served so well during the spring recess from in-school instruction.
  • The challenges to personal and spiritual well-being posed by the uncertainty and physical isolation of the current global crisis makes the timing and the concerns of Mental Health Week, which takes place during the same week as Catholic Education Week, all the more relevant.
  • Ongoing recognition of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission and the relevance of Indigenous culture and spirituality to the spirit of Laudato Si. The CEW biblical quote is,

Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength.” (Isaiah 40:31)
EARTH DAY 2021

Thursday, April 22 is the 52nd annual Earth Day. Although we don't usually highlight "secular" holidays in our communications, this is one occasion where our Catholic beliefs align very closely with the priorities of this secular observance.

As Pope Francis said last year, Earth Day is “an occasion for renewing our commitment to love and care for our common home and for the weaker members of our human family.”

If you'd like to read more about Pope Francis' thoughts on our responsibility as stewards of creation, read the Laudete Si.
