13th Sunday in Ordinary Time

He who receives you receives me...
We hope you've been enjoying our weekly community updates! Please note that over the summer months, we will be reducing its frequency. You can expect an update mid-July and mid-August, and we will resume our regularly scheduled program come September!
Our socials will continue to be updated regularly, so make sure to follow us on your platform of choice!
Although this summer will look a little different than we all might have imagined, we wish you an enjoyable one!

Yesterday we bid farewell to Rachael, a beloved member of our SLT, as she is being called to continue her studies. In her time here, she contributed immeasurably to our faith community with grace and generosity of self that we were so blessed to have been able to experience. Among the greatest gifts of her tenure here, was how instrumental she was in growing and developing our ministry to the students at McMaster University.
We know that you share in our sadness to see her leave, but look forward to what she will achieve as she furthers her studies, and lives her life in service to the Lord. There is comfort in knowing that, as she has made an indelible mark here in ways that we may not even fully realize yet, her experience has also been fruitful for her, and we are honoured to have been a stepping stone in her journey.
On behalf of the team and the church & chaplaincy, she was presented with a Miraculous Medal pendant, as a memento of her time and contributions here at Canadian Martyrs.
We will miss you Rachael!
What a time of transitions we are in! Join the SLT as they chat about the changes in the past months, the ones we are currently undergoing, and what to look forward to through the summer months!
Congratulations to all Canadian Martyrs Church and Chaplaincy students who have graduated, from elementary, secondary, college/university, and graduate programs! May you experience the gift of St. John Henry Newman’s words, as you begin the next steps of your life:
God intends that I shall reach that which is my greatest happiness. He looks on me individually, He calls me by name, He knows what I can do, what I can best be, what is my greatest happiness and He means to give it me.
Special shout out to Adam Jacula who won the Hamilton Wentworth Catholic District School Board’s Living the Spirit Award!

To the benefactors of our Faith community, we thank you for your gifts to our Church and its endeavours.
On Friday, July 3, the daily Mass will be gratefully offered for your intentions.
Our Lady of Canada, pray for us. Have a safe and blessed Canada Day!
(Please note that there is no Mass, and the office will be closed on Canada Day.)
As the lock-down comes to an end, so too will our tithe to local organizations in need. The idea of giving from our weekly collection was a little unconventional, but you embraced it, and we are so grateful for that! Over the course of the past 15 weeks, we have donated $1,897.27 to the following local organizations:
  • St. Joe's COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund
  • St. Patrick's Parish "Resting Station Outreach" program
  • Immigrants Working Center
  • Ronald McDonald House
  • Catholic Family Services
  • St. Martin's Manor
  • Good Shepherd
  • Living Rock Ministries
  • Catholic Youth Organization
As always, we are deeply grateful for your generosity and are honoured to be able to share that with those in need in our local community.

"...whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me."
We know many of our faith community were saddened to hear of the sudden death of Fred Morfaw and would have liked to attend his funeral, if conditions had allowed. The funeral mass was live-streamed and we have provided the link for any who might want to view the liturgy. We ask your continued prayers for his wife Laura and their children.

God's Peace

God's peace is for you. It is with you. It is meant to be spread to the world around you. As you go into this weekend, rest in the peace of God over your life. Pray for God's peace in the lives of those around you who are battling fear and anxiety. Use this prayer from St Francis of Assisi:

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.

O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life.

- ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI

It's not of Catholic origin! Its creation is actually attributed to a Presbyterian minister from Glasgow, Scotland in 1865.  Its use has been adopted by the clergy of many Christian denominations and it actually wasn't even required for Catholic priests until 1886 (at least in the U.S.). Because Roman Catholic priests were more ubiquitous in some areas, and clerical dress was mandated for all priests at all times when outside their living quarters, the clerical collar came to be associated more with the Roman Catholic Church than any other. Learn more about clerical attire here!

A few weeks ago the Diocese reached out to parishes and requested they share the many ways their ministry continued during the period of shutdown. They were so encouraged by the creativity and pastoral care that so many of our parishes showed during this difficult period, they decided to compile these in order to share this good news. They will continue to share these stories over the coming weeks, so more to come! Click the banner to read more!

“Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me." Accept the invitation that is being extended, an invitation by the one who sent Him. If you feel you are being called to the priesthood,  contact Fr. Michael King, Vocation Director, Diocese of Hamilton at 905-528-7988 or vocations@hamiltondiocese.com.

If you would like to have a Mass celebrated for a special occasion, on behalf of a family member, a friend, or a deceased loved one, please call the office to have that intention put into the calendar.

The Saturday intentions are being remembered in Father Markus's private Mass.
