Fr. Hanh Van Tran, OMI, born on July 15, 1969, in Phuoc Binh, Viet Nam, faced challenges growing up in a war-torn and famine-stricken country. His parents, Tran Van Ho and Nguyen Thi Phan, took a brave step during the crisis, putting most of their 11 children on a boat in the hope of securing refugee status in another country. Tragically, the journey claimed the lives of a sister and a brother.
After a year in a refugee camp, they were granted refugee status in Canada. In 1981, Hanh and his seven brothers arrived in Kapuskasing, Ontario, facing the complexities of adapting to a new language, culture, and climate. Hanh pursued studies at Sir Sanford Fleming College, earning a diploma in Career Counseling. Later, he attained a B.A. in Philosophy from the Dominican College in Ottawa.
In 1997, Hanh joined the pre-novitiate in Ottawa and then the novitiate in Godfrey, Illinois. His academic journey continued at Newman Theological College, Alberta, culminating in a Master of Divinity in 2003. Fr. Hanh professed first vows in Godfrey, Illinois, in 1999, made perpetual vows as an Oblate of Mary Immaculate in Ottawa in December 2004, and was ordained to the priesthood at St. Maximilian Colby by Bishop Douglas Crosby, OMI, on May 20, 2005.
