Throughout the Diocese of Hamilton a special collection will be taken on April 23rd to support the Indigenous Reconciliation Fund. This initiative aims to promote healing and reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada.
The Indigenous Reconciliation Fund was created by the Canadian Catholic Church in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action. The Commission identified the Catholic Church as one of the institutions responsible for the residential school system's harm inflicted on Indigenous peoples.
The Diocese of Hamilton's collection is an opportunity to contribute to the larger goal of reconciliation in Canada. The funds raised will be used to support initiatives that promote healing and dialogue between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. This could include supporting Indigenous-led initiatives and events, funding cultural programs, or providing resources for educational opportunities.
The collection is a tangible way for members of the Diocese of Hamilton to show support for Indigenous communities and take steps towards reconciliation. It is also a reminder that we all have a responsibility to engage in this process and work towards healing and reconciliation. By working together, we can create a more just and inclusive society that recognizes the unique contributions of Indigenous peoples and honours their rights and traditions.
