Second Rite of Scrutiny
Lent is a season of reflection, conversion, and preparation, especially for those preparing for baptism at Easter. The Scrutinies, celebrated on the third, fourth, and fifth Sundays of Lent, are moments of grace meant to strengthen catechumens as they journey toward full life in the Church.
The Second Scrutiny, typically celebrated on the Fourth Sunday of Lent, is a time for catechumens to open their hearts to Christ’s transforming power. The priest offers a special exorcism prayer, asking for God’s grace to protect and strengthen them against sin.
This rite is not only for catechumens but for the entire faith community. It invites everyone to examine their hearts, recognize areas of spiritual blindness, and embrace Christ’s light more fully. Conversion is a lifelong journey—one that continually calls us out of darkness and into God’s grace.
