First Rite of Scrutiny

The First Rite of Scrutiny is an important ritual in the RCIA process that takes place during the season of Lent. It is a time of reflection and self-examination for those who are preparing to receive the Sacrament of Baptism or be received into full communion with the Church.

During the First Rite of Scrutiny, the catechumens (those preparing for Baptism) or candidates (those preparing to be received into full communion) are called forward and presented to the assembly. Father Gregory then prays over them and calls upon the Holy Spirit to deepen their faith and strengthen their resolve to follow Christ.

The catechumens or candidates are then invited to reflect on their lives and their relationship with God. They are asked to examine their conscience, to confess their sins, and to seek forgiveness for any wrongdoing. This process of self-examination is intended to help them recognize and confront any obstacles that might be preventing them from fully embracing the faith.

The First Rite of Scrutiny is a powerful reminder of the importance of repentance and the need for ongoing spiritual growth and transformation. It is a time for catechumens and candidates to reaffirm their commitment to Christ and to prepare themselves for the new life that awaits them in the Church.

We are called to support and encourage those who are preparing for baptism or full communion, and to continue to deepen our own faith and relationship with God.
