World Food Day 2023

"Water is life, water is food. Leave no one behind."

In the grand tapestry of creation, water plays a pivotal role. It's essential to life, covering the majority of our planet, making up more than half of our bodies, nurturing the crops that become our food, and sustaining livelihoods around the world.

It's easy to take this precious resource for granted. We turn on the tap, and there it flows. We enjoy a refreshing glass of water without a second thought. But the reality is that water is not an infinite resource. It's finite, and it's under threat.

What we eat and how our food is produced are closely linked with water. The choices we make, from farm to fork, have a profound impact on this vital resource. From irrigation to food processing, water is a fundamental component of our food system.

As a Catholic community, we recognize our moral responsibility to be stewards of creation. We believe in leaving no one behind, whether it's in addressing hunger, social justice, or safeguarding our planet. We understand that taking care of our common home, as Pope Francis beautifully put it, is a calling for all of us.

This World Food Day, let's pledge to be the change. We can make mindful choices about the food we consume and support sustainable agriculture. We can advocate for policies that protect our water resources.

We can, as a community, live out our faith by being responsible custodians of this gift of water and using it to nourish not just our bodies but also our planet.
